The old Jefferson County Courthouse at 527 W. Jefferson St. is now Louisville Metro Hall, an architectural wonder. It is home to
the city government administration
public records requests
permitting and licensing
community development
public safety, and
emergency services.
It also houses these agencies:
Jefferson County TP Clinic
LMPD
the Police Foundation and
Louisville Free Public Library.
A chronicle of its history and construction is here. The statue of Thomas Jefferson, the Kentucky Medal of Honor Memorial, and the Memorial to WWII Veterans decorate its grounds. These tourist attractions make us proud of our country and of those who gave their lives so that we might remain free.
Today, the Gay Pride flag waves near the entrance steps to the Hall. Recently our Mayor, Graig Greenberg, agreed with Chris Hartman, the Executive Director of the Fairness Campaign in Kentucky, that it should be flown year-round. Read more.
This month in public media Louisville is hailed as the first city in Kentucky to ban discrimination against LGBTQ people. The Courier-Journal lists 14 ways to celebrate Pride in Louisville.
An article on the American Bar Association website details legislative milestones of ‘gay’ acceptance in America, noting that ‘the movement for LGBTQ rights has had more rapid success than any other movement in our nation’s history.’ Gay pride has been ensconced as a mainstay of our culture.
No matter how you may view this fixation, do you agree with Mayor Greenberg that the Pride Flag should be flown outside Louisville Metro Hall 365 days each year?
Would it not be more fair to fly a variety of flags during the year?
Below are some to consider, a small sampling of our cultural heritage that would raise esteem for numerous groups and celebrate their important work.
Left to right, top to bottom:
The 4-H flag celebrates positive youth development
The Louisville Bats, Family Fun
Louisville Fire Department, our rescuers
Vietnam Veterans of America
First Responders; the Thin Blue Line is at the center
The Christian flag
The Cards
Prisoners of Wars, Missing in Action
Kentucky Cattlemen; beef is a state agricultural staple
The U.S. Merchant Marine flag; close ally of Louisville
Special Olympics
Kentucky Derby
I plan to suggest this to the Louisville Metro Council soon.
